Subcommittee on Solubility and Equilibrium Data

Description

The Subcommittee on Solubility and Equilibrium Data (SSED) coordinates projects in the area of compilation and critical evaluation of published experimental data on the chemical solubility of well defined substances and other equilibrium systems and coordinates the dissemination of evaluated solubility data through traditional (journal) and electronic (internet-accessible database) means. The SSED also organizes annual meetings of participants (SSED Meetings) to discuss progress on its various projects and biannual scientific conferences (International Symposia on Solubility Phenomena) to promote research in all areas related to solubility and other equilibrium phenomena.  The work of the SSED is carried out by several ongoing projects as described in the following paragraphs.

SSED MEMBERS:  Please check the member roster to the right (or at the bottom of this page when formatted for smaller screens) to make sure that your name is included.  If you find your name, click on it and check that your contact information is correct and up to date.  If your entry is missing or needs updating, contact the Subcommittee Chair, Clara Magalhaes by email with a copy to the Subcommittee Secretary, Earle Waghorne.

Solubility Data Series (SDS)

In the mid-1970s a group of chemists and chemical engineers came together within IUPAC to exhaustively compile and critically evaluate reports of experimental measurements of solubility primary chemical literature.  Beginning with Volume 1 covering the solubility of helium and neon in 1979 work has continued dealing with a wide array of solubilities of gases, liquids and solids in binary, ternary and higher order systems.  By 2016 a total of 103 volumes (list of volumes published, pdf file-207KB) had been published and more are in preparation.  Volumes 1-65 were published as hard bound monographs, first by Pergamon Press (volumes 1 – 53) and later by Oxford University Press (volumes 54 – 65).  Starting with Volume 66 the series has been published by the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data in cooperation with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology and is now formally known as the IUPAC-NIST Solubility Data Series.  For journal publication some volumes have been divided into parts bringing the total number of publications to 136.  A history (pdf file-302KB) of the early work on the SDS was prepared by Professor Larry Clever, one of the original participants.  A guide to the preparation and use of the SDS (pdf file-224KB) and a glossary of solubility terms (pdf file-430KB) have been published.

The goal of the SDS from the start was to compile all experimental solubility data in the world’s reviewed chemistry literature and to critically evaluate this body of data using international teams of experts under the auspices of IUPAC.  It was estimated that the effort would require the production of about 100 volumes each treating a chemically related group of systems.  In 2016 that estimate has been exceeded and the end is not yet in sight.  Some early volumes have already been revised and updated to include new experimental measurements and to incorporate new approaches to critical evaluation.

Since the first volume of the SDS was published in 1979 great advances have occurred in the electronic storage and search for chemical property values including solubility.  While the SDS continues to be published on paper, all volumes are also accessible electronically.  The IUPAC-NIST Solubility Database provides search capability for selected systems and complete access to published volumes as PDF files.  Volumes 1-65 are available for download at no cost; later volumes require a fee.  At the time of this writing (late 2016) IUPAC is working to enhance and expand electronic access to the critically evaluated data of the SDS.

The SDS is an ongoing work.  Expressions of interest from qualified individuals interested in volume preparation as well as questions about the series and its use should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief, Mark Salomon <markinnj@comcast.net>.

International Symposia on Solubility Phenomena (ISSP)

Since 1984 the SSED (and before 2002 its predecessor the Solubility Data Commission, V.8) have organized international meetings under IUPAC sponsorship.  In the IUPAC tradition these symposia have included plenary and invited lectures, contributed papers, poster sessions and opportunities for informal communication among participants.  In addition workshops on various technical and pedagogical topics have been held and meetings of the SSED traditionally  are held in conjunction with ISSP in even numbered years.  Under the SSED the scope of the symposia has been broadened to include a range of equilibrium-related topics.  The dates and venues of past ISSP are given below; information about the 18th ISSP planned for 2018 Tours, France is available .

Franzosini Award

The Franzosini Award was established by the former Solubility Data Commission (V.8), in 1988, during its 14th annual meeting held in Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom, in conjunction with the third International Symposium on Solubility Phenomena (ISSP) that was hosted by A.F. Danil de Namor. The “Paolo Franzosini Endowment Fund” was created in 1988 under the proposal of A. S. Kertes, from the generous donation of Franzosini’s wife and daughter after the sudden death, on the 24th January 1985, of Paolo Franzosini, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Pavia (Italy) while completing the volume 33 of the Solubility Data Series on Molten Alkali Metal Alkanoates. The volume, finished with the help of his colleagues, Paolo Ferloni, Alberto Schiraldi and Giorgio Spinolo, was published in 1988 by Pergamon Press. The family generously offered all fees and honoria associated with the volume for the establishment of the Franzosini Fund. A simple trust fund was established by Anders Björkman (then treasurer of IUPAC), and approved by the IUPAC Bureau as well as by the Commission on Solubility Data (IUPAC Commission V.8) chaired by John Lorimer. Under the terms of the trust the capital is held by IUPAC, the accounting is done by the IUPAC secretariat, and the income derived from the Fund is used exclusively for the activities of the Commission on Solubility Data of the Analytical Chemistry Division; the Chair of the Commission decides the precise use of the money.

The Solubility Data Commission established the Franzosini Award to be given to assist a promising young contributor to the Solubility Data Project to attend, in even years, the ISSP meetings, and in odd years the annual meeting of the Solubility Data Commission. Between 1989 and 2016 there have been twenty two the recipients of this prize often leading to new collaborations many of which are still active in preparation of volumes of the Solubility Data Series. During the SSED meeting of 2008 it was decided that a maximum of two prizes could be given only in the even years, when the SSED meeting and the ISSP meet together.  The recipients of the Franzosini Award as well as the year, the venue, and the name of the proponent have been compiled (pdf file-115KB). View the 2016 recipient.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Franzosini Award; more information is here.

Interdivisional Discussion of Critical Evaluation

The SSED organized an interdivisional discussion of critical evaluation of chemical data as part of the General Assembly held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in July 2017 (see project 2016-043-1-500).  This open meeting attracted 14 participants from six Divisions and Committees of IUPAC to discuss ongoing activities and future need in the area of critical evaluation.  A meeting report is available pdf file 37 KB.
