The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is seeking to appoint a Director of Business Development, who will serve as the lead of the Málaga office of the IUPAC Secretariat. This role is central to the establishment of IUPAC’s new European-based Secretariat, with key locations in Málaga, Spain and Rome, Italy, and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the Union’s global operations. Based in Málaga, the Director will be responsible for the overall management of the site, ensuring effective operations, robust corporate governance, and full legal and regulatory compliance. In parallel, the role will support business development initiatives that contribute to IUPAC’s long-term sustainability and growth. Working closely with the Executive Director and the site lead in Rome, the Director will play a key role in aligning the Málaga office with IUPAC’s broader organisational objectives.
Leading a small dynamic team, the Director will combine operational oversight with a forward-looking approach to organisational development, helping to build efficient systems, strengthen partnerships, and support the continued evolution of IUPAC’s global mission. The position reports to the Executive Director of IUPAC.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and lead daily office functions, facilities, and local administrative workflows.
- Support and advance strategies for growth, revenue diversification, and long-term sustainability for IUPAC.
- Ensure the Union adheres to relevant legal and regulatory requirement, including contract management and corporate compliance.
- Provide direct leadership and support to the Málaga staff.
- Maintain regular interaction with the Executive Director regarding site performance, legal considerations, and business development activities,
- Maintain collaborations with Málaga-based partner organisations.
Desired Experience and Skills
- Experience working with, and coordinating multi-stakeholder projects, expert groups, or advisory committees with culturally and/or globally diverse participants, particularly in the chemical sciences
- Experience in business administration, legal compliance, and organizational management
- Ability to operate both independently and collaboratively in an international environment
- Strong project management skills and ability to manage evolving priorities
- Full command of written and spoken English and Spanish
Compensation and Location
