Secretariat Transition Progresses Smoothly as IUPAC Establishes Its New European-Based Operations.
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is pleased to report that the transition to its new European-based Secretariat is progressing smoothly following the formal establishment of its new Secretariat arrangements in Malaga, Spain, and Rome, Italy.
Following the closure of the Secretariat office in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, earlier this year, IUPAC has been working to establish a distributed Secretariat that reflects the Union’s international character while strengthening its capacity to support the global chemistry community. From 1 September, six members of staff will be based across the two European hubs. Three colleagues will be based in Malaga and three in Italy, providing professional support for the Union’s scientific, operational, and communication activities. During this transition period, the Secretariat also continues to benefit from the experience and commitment of Liana Vaccari who is working remotely from Philadelphia, USA, and Fabienne Meyers, ensuring continuity of service while the new arrangements are fully implemented.
Over the coming weeks, the Secretariat team will continue settling into its new roles and working arrangements while maintaining support for the volunteers who drive IUPAC’s programmes and activities. Through the generous support of its host institutions, the University of Malaga and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Rome, which are providing office space, seconded staff, and corporate support, IUPAC is building a Secretariat that reflects the collaborative spirit of the Union itself. These arrangements will strengthen communication, coordination, and engagement across all levels of membership. In September, IUPAC will introduce the members of its new Secretariat team, highlighting their roles and responsibilities and how they will support the Union’s mission of advancing chemistry for the benefit of humanity.
The transition is carefully planned to ensure continuity for members, partners, and stakeholders, and the Union is grateful for the patience, encouragement, and support received throughout this process. The Union looks forward to this next chapter and to continuing to serve the international chemistry community through a strengthened, collaborative, and globally connected Secretariat.
