IUPAC reaches out to earthquake victims

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry extends its sincerest condolences to the individuals and communities affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey, Syria, and neighboring countries. We are deeply saddened by the devastating consequences of this tragedy, and our thoughts and hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones, as well as to all those whose lives and properties have been impacted by the destruction caused by these earthquakes.

As soon as the first earthquake struck on February 6th, we reached out to our friends and representatives within the Turkish chemical community to express our sympathy and support. We are also aware of the efforts made by organizations such as UNICEF https://rb.gy/sl5bsk and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies https://rb.gy/kqz67k, who are accepting donations to help respond to the needs of the thousands of families and children affected by this tragedy.

As a global community of chemists, at IUPAC we are deeply saddened every time a natural disaster hits and affects many people’s lives. While science continues to advance and provide us with better understanding, prediction, and response capabilities in the face of natural disasters, our thoughts and hearts remain with those affected by this tragedy.
