Each year IUPAC endorses a large number of independently organized conferences, symposiums and workshops that cover a wide range of specialized topics in chemistry. Endorsement by IUPAC attests to the quality of the scientific program and indicates the host country’s assurance that scientists from all countries may participate. See program details.

The conference will be organised around the theme,

A 2020 VISION OF CHEMISTRY EDUCATION

which was inspired by the vision of Nelson Mandela who said:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

“The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation. The Apartheid system emphasized the physical and other differences of South Africans with devastating effects. We are steadily but surely introducing education that enables our children to exploit their similarities and common goals, while appreciating the strength in their diversity.

Nelson Mandela, 1997

It has been 24 years since the inauguration of Nelson Mandela, however the education system is still scarred by the inequalities of Apartheid. ICCE 2020 is a forum where South African and International chemistry educators can build connections between research and practice to bring Nelson Mandela’s vision into a reality in South Africa and education communities across the world.  It provides an opportunity to build partnerships between local and international educators to provide a legacy on which to build the education system envisaged by Nelson Mandela.

The 26th IUPAC International Conference on Chemistry Education (ICCE 2020) which will be held in Cape Town from 13-17 July 2020.
