Objective
To update the 2002 IUPAC recommendations on how to name newly discovered chemical elements. (Pure Appl. Chem., 2002, Vol. 74, No. 5, pp. 787-791 https://dx.doi.org/10.1351/pac200274050787)
Description
The revision is needed now because the ending for element names recommended over 12 years ago, might not be generally applicable and should at least be reconsidered. In particular it was not anticipated that the pace of discoveries of new heavy elements would be so fast that it would reach the halides or the noble gas groups in the foreseeable future.
Progress
October 2015 – the provisional recommendations titled ‘How to Name New Chemical Elements’ is made available for public review until 29 February 2016.
