Each year IUPAC endorses a large number of independently organized conferences, symposiums and workshops that cover a wide range of specialized topics in chemistry. Endorsement by IUPAC attests to the quality of the scientific program and indicates the host country’s assurance that scientists from all countries may participate. See program details.

23rd International Conference on Physical Organic Chemistry (ICPOC-23)

  • This event has passed.

ICPOC is a biannual conference, with the previous two being held in Durham, UK (ICPOC21, 2012) and Ottawa, Canada (ICPOC22, 2014).  Physical organic chemistry of this conference series is viewed as ‘a broad church’ encompassing not just the traditional physical organic areas of mechanism, reactivity and structure but extending into biology, materials science and systems chemistry.  Accordingly, the streams of this conference will be:

  • Physical Foundations of Organic Reactivity
  • Mechanism and Bioorganic Chemistry
  • Supramolecular and Systems Chemistry

Report – ICPOC23 was held at the University of New South Wales from July 3rd-8th 2016. With nearly 300 attendees (from 35 countries and every permanently inhabited continent), this conference covered not just the traditional areas of physical organic chemistry such as reactivity, mechanism and structure but also how it can be applied to diverse fields including biology, materials science and systems chemistry.

The lecture programme was extensive, with over 140 lectures presented (including those by Nobel Laureate Arieh Warshel and the world’s most cited chemical scientist, George Whitesides) along with more than 80 poster presentations. In addition to the scientific programme, the conference included an extremely popular conference dinner (with 180 attendees), a cruise on Sydney Harbour and a very successful Forum on the Future of Chemistry.

The conference organisers would like to express our gratitude to all of the people who supported this conference, from the attendees through to our extensive list of sponsors; we would particularly like to acknowledge our principal sponsors – School of Chemistry, University of New South Wales; Faculty of Science, University of New South Wales; The Australian National University; The Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, University of Queensland; The Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer, New South Wales State Government.

Jason Harper, Chair ICPO23 Organising Committee
