Each year IUPAC endorses a large number of independently organized conferences, symposiums and workshops that cover a wide range of specialized topics in chemistry. Endorsement by IUPAC attests to the quality of the scientific program and indicates the host country’s assurance that scientists from all countries may participate. See program details. In addition, the calendar below includes webinars and workshops related to specific IUPAC projects or joint activities with associated organizations.

21st International Conference on Retinal Proteins

The 21st International Conference on Retinal Proteins (ICRP2026) will be held in Siena, Italy, from September 14th to 19th, 2026.

ICRP2026 focuses on the Photophysics, Photochemistry and Photobiology of the, arguably, more extended and diffuse biological photoreceptor family of our planet (more than 500,000 known members found in organisms belonging to all kingdoms of life) including visual and non-visual pigments in humans, ion-pumps, ion-channels and enzymes in algae, bacteria and Archaea. Recently, the conference has been extended to retinal protein enabled technologies that are advancing structural biology and imaging, synthetic chemistry and biology, and neuroscience with application in medical and environmental sciences. Emerging experimental and computational tools for the investigation of retinal proteins, as well as the impact of AI technologies will also be part of the conference program.

The ICRP was established in 1984 as the only international conference to comprehensively address retinal-binding proteins. Since then, the conference has been held every two years at different venues around the world. Its main objective is to provide a forum for sharing the latest research results in rhodopsin studies, including structural, spectroscopic, genetic, biochemical, evolutionary, and physiological investigations, as well as emerging technologies.

Chair/contacts:  Chair Massimo Olivucci (University of Siena & Bowling Green State University, USA) olivucci@unisi.it,
