Fajrini Matjalina is a director and product developer at Smart Coating Technologies (B) Sdn. Bhd, a spin-off company from Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Universiti Brunei Darussalam in 2012. She then pursued her Master of Science in Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. She recently completed her Ph.D in Energy Studies from Universiti Brunei Darussalam in the development of protective coatings. Her research interest focuses on green chemistry with the application of photocatalysis and fluoropolymer for the development of protective coatings. She has filed three patents with Universiti Brunei Darussalam and one of the inventions was licensed to her company to manufacture and commercialize the product. The product is currently exported Thailand, Japan and Myanmar.
Fajrini has been focusing on developing a highly durable protective coating for building infrastructures in tropical climate countries. She has developed an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal photocatalytic coatings with the use of photocatalyst and fluoropolymers. It uses photocatalysis to produce hydrophilic surfaces and strong oxidizing agents for easy removal and decomposition of dirt and organic pollutants providing a self-cleaning property to the coating. Therefore, it eliminates the maintenance activity for cleaning services and helps to reduce the cost of maintenance of the building.
Fajrini also provides seminars and talks to schools across the country to provide a better understanding on the application of Green Chemistry especially photocatalysis and give an exposure on the scientific research and development towards sustainable and innovative green technology and to provide better understanding in the transition of research and development in Science to the commercialization phase in Brunei Darussalam.
