The year 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of IUPAC and also the 150th anniversary of the development of the Periodic Law of the Elements independently by Dmitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer.

international year of the periodic table

To celebrate these anniversaries, IUPAC will be hosting an online quiz about the Periodic Table of the Elements. It will highlight how IUPAC has shaped the global affairs of chemistry and contributed to creating a common language for chemistry. The online challenge will be aimed at a global audience of young students. Questions about the elements will quiz their knowledge and inform them of the relevant work of IUPAC. The global challenge will be launched in January 2019 and is available all year until the end of 2019.

Many aspects of the Periodic Table and the information that it unveils are subjects of several IUPAC projects. While we are working on developing the online challenge, we invite you to review and download the latest Table, listing all 118 elements recognized thus far; see

Please submit your suggested questions for the Periodic Table Challenge via our On-Line form.
