Hemda Garelick has been awarded the status of Emeritus Fellow in Division VI. This appointment reflects her standing as a scientist and continuing service to the division and to the Union.
Dr. Garelick is a professor of Environmental Science and Public Health Education, she is a Chemist and a microbiologist by training.
She has been working on various Environmental Pollutants and their effect on human and environmental health. This includes the detection and impact assessment of a range of pollutants (e.g. arsenic, micro and nano plastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals and components of electronic waste) as well as microbiological agents such as antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and SARS in wastewater.
She has worked with colleagues on over 35 IUPAC projects the majority of which have been completed, resulting in symposia, journal special issues and individual paper publications (https://repository.mdx.ac.uk/researcher/80728/dr-hemda-garelick), https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4568-2300
She has been active in IUPAC Chemistry and the Environment Division for over 25 years during which she served as a Titular member, Secretary, Vice President, President and Past President. During this time she led the development and implementation of numerous symposia and workshops, introduced the Environmental Chemistry Poster Prize as part of the IUPAC General Assembly (GA) and World Chemistry Congress, and was active in encouraging young and early-career chemists to get involved in IUPAC activities. She was part of the team that led and coordinated the events at the World Chemistry Leadership Meetings (WCLM) during the General Assemblies in Sao Paulo, Brazil (2017) and Busan, South Korea (2015).
She has been a member of the IUPAC Bureau and is now a member of the IUPAC Executive Board.
