Professor  Ron Weir has been awarded the status of Emeritus Fellow in Division I. This 2020 appointment reflects his standing as a scientist and continuing service to the division and to the Union.

Prof. R. Weir (Canada) has been an enthusiastic member and has contributed to a wide range of activities since joining IUPAC in 1988 as a members of the Commission on Thermodynamics. In 2020, he chairs the Commission on Physicochemical Symbols, Terminology, and Units and is the only individual in IUPAC history who has served twice as President of the Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division  (2004-2005 and 2018-2019). He is a member of the Subcommittee on Cheminformatics Data Standards (SCDS), the Pure and Applied Chemistry Editorial Advisory Board, and the Interdivisional Subcommittee on Materials Chemistry. He was a key member of the IUPAC team whose work led to the recent redefinition of the mole and kilogram (https://doi.org/10.1515/pac-2017-0106, https://doi.org/10.1515/pac-2016-0808).

Prof. Weir was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, and obtained a B.Sc. degree at the University of New Brunswick, and DIC and Ph.D. degrees from Imperial College of Science, London, U.K. In 1968, he joined the teaching staff of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada as a military officer and as Assistant Professor. He was appointed Professor in 1981. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC), Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC). He has served as President and Past President of the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics.
