Goals & Objectives
The Safety Training Program, or STP, is coordinated by the Committee on Chemistry and Industry (COCI). The STP Fellowship Training Program promotes interactions between developed countries and the developing world. It enables mid-level chemical professionals from developing countries to learn more about safety, security and environmental protection measures by visiting and working at Host Companies in industrialized countries. Since 2000, STP Fellows from Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, China, India, Ghana and Uruguay, have received training at Host Companies in the U.S.A., Japan, South Africa, U.K., Canada, Denmark, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. Review the Safety Training Fellows page for past STP Fellow reports, current profiles, presentations and STP Fellowship Trainee Report requirements. Historically, 1-2 STP Fellowship candidates from developing countries are trained per year to deliver improved Environmental, Health, and Safety programs to their institution and home country.
In 2016, the STP regional training program in Latin America for STP Associate Fellows was initiated. This STP-LA training in Uruguay created a center for learning increased chemical safety & security in local languages. For more information, view the Safety Training Associate Fellows page.
Complementary to these STP programs are the STP Workshops held during the biennial IUPAC General Assembly/Congress. These workshops are an opportunity for the trained STP Fellows and STP Associate Fellows to present and share their experiences. The details of the 2019 STP Workshop in Paris can be reviewed below. View the Safety Training Program Workshops page for more details on previous workshops.
The Safety Training Program is an IUPAC COCI Global Project. The 2019 IUPAC 100 Celebration stories web page highlights the contributions of 6 STP Fellows who demonstrate how IUPAC Contributes to Global Chemical Safety by Training Leaders in Developing Countries.

2019 STP Workshop, Paris, France
The 2019 Safety Training Workshop was the ninth in a series held in conjunction with the 47th IUPAC World Chemistry Congress/50th General Assembly. It was held at the Congress site in Paris on the afternoon of 8 July 2019.
This year’s STP Workshop theme was “Celebrating 20 Years of IUPAC COCI Safety Training” with two Keynote Speakers highlighting the history of STP from 1993-2017. Invited Speakers highlighted STP Fellows, STP Associate Fellows and a Host Companies experience as well as the STP-Latin America regional program’s history and perspectives. There were also presentations from past STP Fellows and STP Associate Fellows.
The 2019 STP Workshop Agenda, Biographies and Abstracts provide an overall view of the workshop. There were approximately 20 attendees at this Workshop. The workshop was opened by the STP Coordinator Robert Audette 2019 Opening Remarks. The presentations from the 2 Keynote Speakers Mark Cesa 2019 and Bernard West 2019 were followed by Thomas in der Weide 2019 from the Host Company Bayer AG, Germany. Austin Aluoch 2019 presented his recent STP Fellowship training experience, Fabian Benzo 2019 (2007 STP Fellow) outlined the STP-LA programs, Christine Ashaolu 2019 (2015 STP Fellow) presented her continuing STP work in Nigeria and Gracia Romero & Natiela de Oliveira 2019 (2018 STP Associate Fellows) provided two STP Associate Fellows perspectives. Robert Audette 2019 closed the workshop by presenting the current STP status and its future plans.

In recent years, former STP Fellows have also initiated STP activities of their own. Review the STP regional project in Latin America by Prof. Fabian Benzo and the STP regional project in India by Dr. Gursharn Grover on the Fellows and Associate Fellows pages.
