SUMMARY:Open Access and FAIR Data in the Chemical Sciences Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Publishing research is crucial for the scientific community and general public\, especially as journals provide a convenient source of peer-reviewed literature which can help inform new research and ensure reproducibility. However\, traditional publication models can be inaccessible due to paywalls and expensive publishing fees. Open Access publishing and FAIR (Findability\, Accessibility\, Interoperability\, and Reusability) data guidelines have been widely accepted in the chemical sciences field to increase the availability of research. Unfortunately\, obstacles ranging from finding an equitable approach to determining liability for publishing fees have hindered widespread implementation of these practices. \nJoin the Chemical Sciences Roundtable next week\, on August 1\, 2023\, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm ET\, for a webinar on open access and FAIR data in the chemical sciences. This webinar will provide an overview of open access publishing and FAIR data principles\, as well as discuss challenges and solutions specific to the chemical sciences for equitable implementation. All members of the public are welcome to register to attend. For more information\, please visit the event webpage. \nLeah McEwen will be presenting on the IUPAC Case Study and WorldFAIR Chemistry project \nREGISTER HERE \nIf you have questions\, please email Kay Wymbs at Kwymbs@nas.edu. \n \nPhoto by Emil Widlund on Unsplash

SUMMARY:POLY-CHAR 2022
DESCRIPTION:POLY-CHAR [Halle|Siegen] 2022 will take place as an all-digital online meeting and aims at building bridges in polymer materials science by spanning the gap between the COVID-pandemic affected to the post-COVID period that we hopefully all witness very soon. In particular\, the meeting shall bridge the previous meetings in the longstanding series with annual conferences and associated short courses\, specifically POLY-CHAR [Venice]\, which eventually had to be held as digital meeting with one year delay in 2021\, and the upcoming POLY-CHAR [Auckland] 2023. \nPOLY-CHAR 2022 World Forum on Advanced Materials and “Short Course on Polymer Characterization”\nPOLY-CHAR [Halle|Siegen] 2022 is scheduled for 22-25 May 2022\, with a short course on polymer characterization on 22 May\, followed by the conference program with lectures and posters on 23-25 May. The online program features in addition to numerous contributed and invited talks plenary lectures by leading scientist in the field\, the prize winners as well as brilliant researchers in the early state if their careers. \nThe annual forum brings together researchers\, including senior professors\, young scientists\, students and experts from industries as well as from academia\, involved in experiment\, theory and computer simulations to achieve a systemic understanding of connections between structures\, interactions and properties of polymers. Thematically POLY-CHAR [Halle|Siegen] 2022 encompasses all areas of polymer –related research with dedicated highlight sessions on ‘Polymers for Circular Economy’ as well as ‘Polymers for Health’\, including biopolymers in nutrition and health. \nFrom the beginning one of the important aims of this conference is to put a special emphasis on international collaboration\, promotion of young scientists and collegial environment. Hence it gives a forum also to young scientist to present their results and meet with distinguished scientists from all over the world. \nContact: \nDr. Sven Henning\nFraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS\n06120 Halle (Saale)\, Germany\nE-mail: sven.henning@imws.fraunhofer.de \nProf. Dr. Holger Schönherr\nUniversity of Siegen\, Department of Chemistry & Biology & Research Center of Micro and Nanochemistry and (Bio)technology (Cμ); Physical Chemistry I\n57076 Siegen\, Germany\nE-Mail: schoenherr@chemie.uni-siegen.de \n\nPost-event report published in Chem Int Oct 2022 (p. 48) \nSee PAC Feb 2023 for a collection of invited papers based on presentations at the International Polymer Characterization Forum POLY-CHAR 2022. SUMMARY:Chemistry on the Global Stage: Data\, Standards\, Infrastructure\, and Challenges for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Symposium organized by ACS Division of Chemical Information [CINF] & IUPAC CPCDS during the Spring 2022 ACS meeting.\nThe practice of chemistry in today’s global\, digital research environment is quite different from that of even a decade ago for all sectors – industry\, academia\, and government. Researchers\, publishers/editors\, educators\, librarians\, data repository managers\, data scientists\, policy and standards developers\, funders – indeed all stakeholders in the research process from inception through publication and preservation – are struggling with how best to leverage digital technology to ensure that research results can be efficiently utilized not only today\, but also well into the future by new generations of scientists. This symposium will open with session that will provide an overview of the fundamental question that is being addressed: how can all stakeholders most effectively and efficiently manage research outputs as each fulfills their specific role in the research process (e.g. what fundamental standards and metadata are required to ensure that data is Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reproducible (FAIR) as well as being properly attributed\, and that scientific integrity can be validated and preserved throughout the workflow and into the future?). This overview session will also provide examples of why this question is basic to the advancement of science and will take a look at what initiatives have been implemented to answer it. Following this overview\, successive sessions will drill down into the issues that must be addressed to ensure that smooth and seamless “data handoffs’ can be made throughout the research workflow\, not the least of which is the development of a new\, sustainable infrastructure that supports decentralized workflows and facilitates interoperability between and across communication networks\, vendor equipment/software\, and data repositories. In closing\, the symposium will take a look at the future and the potential changes in both chemistry education and data-sharing policies that are needed to facilitate both a cultural and behavioral shift in how all stakeholders in the research process perceive and handle data. \nView detailed program @ACS\, and including 3 sessions:\n10:00am – 01:25pm USA / Canada – Pacific – March 21\, 2022\n03:00pm – 06:55pm USA / Canada – Pacific – March 21\, 2022\n10:00am – 01:55pm USA / Canada – Pacific – March 22\, 2022 \nFor more information\, contact Leah McEwen\, Organizer and chair of CPCDS \n \nPhoto by Alina Grubnyak on Unsplash

SUMMARY:XIII Postgraduate Summer School on Green Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Summer School is being planned both onsite in Venice and online\nThe Summer School does offer the unique opportunity to bring together a number of experts in the field of Green Chemistry and young researchers. This synergy of competencies is a valuable occasion to promote and facilitate diffusion and transfer of the knowledge in this emerging and evolving field. \nAIMS\n• Teach postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers in chemistry and associated disciplines from all over the world\, either from academia or industry.\n• Indicate Green Chemistry as fundamental tool to approach pollutant reduction at source.\n• Give a view of the state-of-the-art on Green Chemistry researches in the last decades.\n• Facilitate a profitable and continuous exchange of ideas and information among the students\, the instructors and the different stakeholders for the establishment of long-lasting scientific relationships. All these students will be ambassadors of Green Chemistry in their institutions\, in their Countries\, and to their peers\, and so invited to form international networks of scientists. \nThe Summer School is organized and managed by the Green Sciences for Sustainable Development Foundation (www.gssd-foundation.org)\, a non-profit Foundation based in Venice\, Italy. The Foundation’s website provides access to various lectures\, proceedings\, and reports of the previous editions of the Summer Schools. \nContact: green.chemistry@unive.it\nCa’ Foscari University of Venice\nDepartment of Environmental Sciences\, Informatics and Statistics\nVia Torino 155\, 30172 Venezia Mestre \nBecause of the COVID-19 crisis\, we are not able to deliver the Summer School in person in Venice\, this will be carried out Online only. In fact\, both modalities (Onsite and Online) will be followed because we experienced last July (2020) a real request for students to learn on green sciences. (see Chem Int Jan 2021 for report)\nIt is expected that in this stimulating Venetian environment students and instructors will find an informal and relaxed atmosphere. This will give young researchers the opportunity to establish new contacts and to exchange information on their researches in chemistry which will consent intimate discussions\, questions\, a profitable exchange of ideas\, and the beginning of new scientific collaborations.\nIn the past twelve editions\, the rigorous selection of the participants contributed to form a class of high cultural level students. This was a real success for the previous editions of SSs. SUMMARY:Public Access to Research Data: Guidance\, Culture\, and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nToby Smith\, Vice President for Policy\, Association of American Universities (bio) \nPhilip Tarrant\, Research Data Management Officer\, Arizona State University (bio) \nToby Smith will share the work of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Association of American Universities (AAU) on the project Accelerating Public Access to Research Data (APARD). Convening more than 30 institutions to develop national guidance on sharing data for public access\, the work will soon culminate in a guide for institution leadership. Toby will share the opportunity societies have in supporting the culture change needed both nationally and internationally for efforts like APARD to be fully adopted. \nPhilip Tarrant is an active participant\, along with his colleagues at Arizona State University\, in the APARD project. He is a strong advocate and expert for data management and will share his tactical approach to integrating data management and sharing in ASU’s research practices and grants. APARD is helping support the culture change\, but with Philip’s earlier work\, ASU is an example of an institution making strategic changes in requirements for data management\, investment in resources\, and targeted budget guidance for grant that builds in the necessary funds that results in public access requirements. \nTo register for the series or just this seminar: Registration Here \nIf you have previously registered for the series\, you will receive both an email and outlook invite with the zoom link on or near 22 March. A reminder will be sent out on 1 April as well. \nInformation on the Seminar Series:\nSocieties have a unique role in bringing awareness of developing practices and supporting the necessary discussions within disciplines to bring their voice to the larger community. \nThese seminars are monthly through January 2022 held on the first Friday of each month at 10am ET (14:00 UTC). SUMMARY:An update on the development of the InChI
DESCRIPTION:A major theme emerging from the December 2020 NIH Workshop on Ultra Large Chemistry Databases is the essential role of the IUPAC International Chemical Identifier (InChI) in our ability to link and query across large and diverse chemistry data resources. Therefore\, we now seek to bring the chemistry community together for an update on the development of the InChI and a discussion of its use in chemistry\, biochemistry\, and related research domains. \nSpeakers will report on developments in the InChI field\, usage of InChI in their organization\, as well as challenges and areas not yet covered by InChI. The virtual workshop is scheduled for three half-days on March 22-24\, from 11 AM – ~3PM EST and will include short talks and panel discussions (Preliminary program here).
