Little is known about the physicochemical and biological interfacial interactions at the molecular level in the rhizosphere. The dynamics, transformations, bioavailability, and toxicity of metal pollutants, anthropogenic organics, and essential elements should be influenced enormously by the chemistry and biology of the rhizosphere. Therefore, the research on this subject matter should be an issue of intense interest on a global scale for years to come. It is for this reason that a symposium on Soil-Root-Microbe Interactions and the Impact on the Transformation and Fate of Nutrients and Pollutants in the Ecosystem will be held 26–30 November 2008 in Pucón, Chile. The symposium, which is IUPAC sponsored, will be the fifth in the series on Interactions of Soil Minerals with Organic Components and Microorganisms of Commission 2.5 Soil Interfacial Reactions of the International Union of Soil Sciences.

The objective of this symposium is to provide a forum in which environmental chemists and mineralogists, environmental microbiologists, ecologists, toxicologists, and soil scientists can interact, gain state-of-the-art knowledge, and identify gaps in the field. This symposium should advance the environmental chemistry of soil interfacial reactions in the rhizosphere and the subsequent development of innovative management strategies to sustain environmental quality, ensure food security and safety, and encourage ecosystem health on a global scale.
