SAICM is a global process of a determination the future of the chemistry and chemical industry. IUPAC as a global academia and a nongovernmental organization might play a serious role in SAICM’s implementation. In the frame of the IUPAC’s strategy, which promotes safety using of chemicals, this project main goal to outline the contributions of the IUPAC in SAICM. This information will be collected and presented at fifth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5, 5-9 October 2020, Bonn, Germany) that will provide the public and stakeholders an opportunity for kind of IUPACs activity assessment and project the future common activity.
Since the modern chemistry includes intellectual achievements, scientific creativity and originality and the acquisition of new knowledge, the IUPAC has a unique opportunity to contribute to the interdisciplinary chemical goals in frame of SAICM. For example, IUPAC’s vision of green chemistry, might use as basic standards of chemicals safety in the academic, industry and other fields.
For this realisation the next steps are planned in frame this project:
Step 1. Analysis of last documents on the implementation of SAICM beyond and after 2020. For this might be organize a visit on the third meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group for the SAICM is scheduled to take place on 2-4 April 2019 in Montevideo, Uruguay (or correspondence study of documents for this meeting).
Step 2. Update information on the IUPAC contribution to the implementation of SAICM and prepare a position and papers to present the capabilities and activities of IUPAC at ICCM5. The discussion these papers and the IUPAC 50th General Assembly (COCI meeting etc.) in Paris in July 2019.
Step 3. A presentation on the activities of IUPAC will be prepared at ICCM5 from 5 to 9 October 2020 in Bonn Germany. This information will be as a basis for discussing joint SAICM activities with UN Environment, CEFIC, ICCA.
Step 4. Prepare the IUPAC recommendation for further activities in the framework of SAICM. The result of the project will be the recommendations of IUPAC regarding possible development activities within the framework of SAICM.

Sep 2019 update – The task group chair will participate in the SAICM 3rd meeting of the intersessional process considering the Strategic Approach and sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, 1-4 October 2019. Earlier, as a representative of IUPAC, she participated in the 2nd meeting of the intersessional process in Stockholm. These intersessional meetings support stakeholders in their efforts to elaborate the future arrangements of the Strategic Approach and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 for consideration and adoption at the next session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) to be held in Bonn, Germany, from 5 to 9 October 2020.
Feb 2020 update – Support is made available to facilitate the engagement and participation of one or two IYCN members in the Fourth meeting of the intersessional process considering the Strategic Approach and sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 (Bucharest, Romania, 23-27 March 2020). The involvement of youth in the SAICM project is encouraged by the UN Environment (SAICM Youth Engagement Meeting, February 17, 2020). The opportunity of such collaboration between COCI and IYCN will strengthen IUPAC links to SAICM.
