The NPU terminology is a coding system and terminology for identification and communication, storage and presentation of examination results from clinical laboratories in the health area. The NPU Terminology is implemented in nearly all electronic systems in laboratory departments at the hospitals, in the private labs, suppliers of laboratory systems and EHRs in Health Care Systems in the three Scandinavian Countries, and the Terminology has proved useful in Health Informatics and in Health Care for more than 15 years, and is today a National standard in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The problem is that the NPU Terminology is poorly known outside the Scandinavian Countries. This project seeks to increase the general knowledge of the NPU Terminology, create interest, and demonstrate the use and the value of terminology.
The development of the NPU Terminology has been, and still is a joint IFCC-IUPAC work with international, primarily European participation. The NPU Terminology is implemented in nearly all electronic systems in laboratory departments at the hospitals, in the private labs, suppliers of laboratory systems and EHRs in the three Scandinavian Countries. Moreover, the growing use of EHR in healthcare systems fuels a fast growth of clinical data available in electronic format. This growth offers tremendous potential for the use of clinical data beyond its primary intent (i.e., patient care and healthcare operations). Secondary use (or reuse) of clinical data is a valuable source for research, statistics, quality/safety measurement, reimbursement etc.
The video seeks demonstrate how the NPU Terminology is used – with ‘Voice Over’ for speaking where it makes sense.
The Video will start at the GP where a laboratory examination is requested, to the phlebotomist where patient will have blood test, to the labs where the examination of the blood test is analyzed, and to the results are given. At the end the IUPAC, Silver Book will be presented as the basic standard on the NPU terminology.
Flyers/folders are intended to describe both the direct use in Health Care as an international coding system enabling transmission between different systems, and the lasting value of the data transmitted, enabling their reuse in new contexts. As the precise definitions of each investigation result are based on IUPAC Recommendations and International standards, there will be no loss of meaning over time or geography.
May 2019 update – The project for producing a video for presentation of the NPU terminology is ready for in first draft version.
The project group has to decide the Intro and the credits in the Video.
The first draft on the Leaflets is made, and the work will continue until it will be presented on the IUPAC congress in Paris, July 2019.
