Project Details Corrections, Revisions and Extension for the Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry - IUPAC Recommendations and Preferred Names 2013 (the IUPAC Blue Book)

Project No.:
2015-052-1-800
Start Date:
18 December 2015
End Date:
Division Name:
Chemical Nomenclature and Structure Representation
Division No.:
800

Objective

This project intends to provide four results:

  • a list of errata to the 2013 IUPAC Blue Book
  • an improved Subject Index for the 2013 Blue Book
  • some corrected, improved or revised sections for the 2013 Blue Book
  • some additional sections for the Blue Book to deal with omissions from the current edition.

Description

At the end of 2013 the book Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry – IUPAC Recommendations and Preferred Names 2013 (the IUPAC Blue Book) was published as hard copy and as non-searchable PDF (IUPAC project 2001-043-1-800). Almost immediately after its publication, translators, reviewers and users noticed and communicated errors and inconsistencies. As a result a small task group within Division VIII was formed to review and list all these detected errors in the form of errata which since then are continuously added to the web page https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sbcs/iupac/bibliog/BBerrors.html. However, clear procedures for a thorough review and check of each entry before its inclusion in this public list have been established and followed only after the list had already reached quite a length.

During this thorough review more inconsistencies between sections in the Blue Book were noticed and missing sections or some sections or paragraphs which were not fully explained. For example there is no rule stating the priority order of phosphanyl vs. λ5-phosphanyl in the alphanumerical order of substituents within a name. The task group will address any issues they will become aware of as was already stated in the preface to the 2013 Blue Book (pp. xxvii/xxviii): “It is however inevitable that some ambiguities and unsuspected difficulties will be encountered. Task forces will be established to rapidly answer questions, give guidance to authors and ensure the homogeneity of the system.” Any observations by users in the current printed Blue Book can – after cross-checking by the user with the above errata list – be sent to the task group via the e-mail address bluebook@iupac.org.

The project will be conducted in several steps. First the current list of nomenclature and structure errata will be completely checked to ensure that it is absolutely correct and will not need to be revised again, while continuing to add new observations. The next step will be a preparation of a PDF of the entire Book which includes all the corrections and additions because it is very inconvenient for users to have to consult a long list of errata together with the Book itself. Together with this corrected PDF also a new subject index, prepared by the task group, will be provided. Finally, a new edition including all missing sections and revised sections such as extensions of the rules for alphanumerical order, consideration of configuration in the selection of the parent of a compound, naming of amines, use of enclosing marks will be prepared.

Progress

Any observations by users in the current printed Blue Book can – after cross-checking by the user with the errata list page https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sbcs/iupac/bibliog/BBerrors.html – be sent to the task group via the e-mail address bluebook@iupac.org.
