IUPAC has contributed and observed the VIM1 and the GUM2 in all its emanating documents.
Although they are the ultimate metrological authority, VIM and GUM are documents which are not very ‘user-friendly’ as far as practical applications are concerned. It is the objective of this project to facilitate use of the VIM and GUM, particularly, but not exclusively, in the chemical community by providing a short summary (about 4 to 6 pages) to promote understanding and use of the VIM and GUM.
- Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology (2012). International vocabulary of metrology; Basic and general concepts and associated terms VIM. JCGM 200:2012. Sevres, www.bipm.org/en/publications/guides/vim.html, BIPM.
- Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology (2008). Evaluation of measurement data – Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement. JCGM 100:2008. Sevres, www.bipm.org/utils/common/documents/jcgm/JCGM_100_2008_E.pdf, BIPM.
It is important to gather together a small task group of members from Division I and V to work on this important summary of an important terminological vocabulary with its consistent concept entries as opposed to a mere ‘glossary’ (VIM) and approaches to evaluate measurement uncertainties in accordance with the GUM. Much will be done by email and Skype, but experience has shown that a face-to-face meeting is mandatory.
July 2019 update – the project plan was reviewed during the General Assembly meeting in July 2019 with the plan to have an output produced within one year.
