One of the important goals of the Polymer Division is the education of young chemists and in particular chemists in the emerging world. We plan to hold a symposium at the upcoming World Polymer Congress in Chiang Mai, in July 2014 and to discuss education strategies for teaching polymer chemistry with efforts especially focused on the developing world.
To start, we will identify experts in polymer education and propose them as speakers for the Polymer Education symposium. Special attention will be taken to have experts from countries in South-East Asia and Africa. They will report on the status of polymer education and the needs for improvement in their countries and describe areas where help would be especially valuable. Task group members present at the Symposium will contribute to discussions and to facilitate a more in-depth interaction between the experts and the attendees, but also with students.
Sep 2015 update – The symposium on polymer education took place in the frame of World Polymer Congress Macro 2014 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Powerpoint slides of the presentations have been uploaded on the IUPAC Polymer Division Subcommittee on Polymer Education (SPEd; www.iupac.org/polyedu). Furthermore a volume dedicated to our symposium with 15 contributions has been published in Macromolecular Symposia Vol. 355.
The project will ultimately be reviewed internally by the Polymer Division during its annual meeting to he held during Macro 2016 in Istanbul (July 2016).
