IUPAC Elections for the 2026-2027 Term – Call for nominations

Every two years, IUPAC holds an election for its officers and committee members. Any qualified individual who is interested in being nominated is invited to contact his/her National Adhering Organization (NAO) and/or the current committee officers. Details on the call for nominations for the members of Divisions and Committees is available hereNominations must be completed no later than 15 January 2025.

Election of IUPAC Officers, Members of the Executive Board and Science Board

At its next General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur in July 2025, the IUPAC Council will be asked to elect a Vice President, a Treasurer, and members of the Executive Board and Science Board. IUPAC National Adhering Organizations are invited to submit nominations no later than 31 March 2025.

Vacancies for the 2026-27 biennium are:

Vice President (and President-elect):
On 1 January 2026, Mary Garson (Australia), Vice President and President-Elect of IUPAC, will become President. Ehud Keinan (Israel), current President, will become Past President and remain an officer and a member of the Executive Board for a period of two years, while Javier García-Martínez (Spain), current Past President, will retire. Nominations for Vice President position are invited.

The Vice President has a key leadership role within IUPAC, both in governance, as a member of the Executive Board, and in management, as Chair of the Science Board. The Vice President in 2026-27 will become President of IUPAC for the 2028-29 biennium, and in preparation for that role is asked to carry out a critical assessment of the programs and the projects of all IUPAC bodies. A broad understanding of the scope of IUPAC activities is vital to this role, along with the vision and leadership experience appropriate for the pre-eminent international body in chemistry.

Treasurer:
Treasurer Wolfram Koch (Germany) was elected by the Council in August 2021 for a four-year term and is eligible for re-election. However, Wolfram Koch confirmed that he will retire at the end of 2025. Nominations for Treasurer are invited.

The Treasurer is responsible for the accounts of the Union. This includes preparing the biennial budget of the Union for approval by the Executive Board and the Council and following consultation with the Science Board, expenditure approvals, and responsibility for the investment and custody of the funds of the Union. The Treasurer ensures that an appropriate record of all financial authorities and transactions is maintained.

On both the Executive Board and Science Board, the period of service of the Elected Members is two years, and these Members elected by Council are eligible for re-election to the same position for a second two-year term. The periods of service shall be arranged in such a way as to ensure continuity. The principle of fair geographical and gender representation of Members shall be taken into account, as stipulated in the IUPAC Statutes. All current Elected Members are eligible for re-election. Nominations are invited.

Executive Board Member (6 positions): IUPAC is seeking nominations of motivated candidates with experience in directing the affairs of a non-profit organisation whose work is done primarily by volunteers. Although prior knowledge and experience of IUPAC’s structures and modus operandi would be beneficial, we welcome nominations from candidates with governance experience in other organisations. See more details.

Science Board Member (5 positions): In addition to five members chosen from the ranks of the Division Presidents and Committee Chairs, the Science Board includes five members from the chemistry community at large elected by the Council. Thus, IUPAC is seeking nominations of motivated and experienced international thought leaders in chemistry and related subjects. These individuals should have good awareness and understanding of current and emerging issues in chemistry and how this relates to other sciences and the international scientific effort. Prior experience in advisory work of this nature would be a plus. See more details.

Further information on these roles can be found by contacting the Secretary General, Zoltán Mester (zmester@iupac.org), or in the IUPAC Statutes and Bylaws.

To express an interest in being nominated as Vice President, Treasurer, or Board Member, please complete the nomination form and submit before or on 31 March 2025. Applicants must be from a member country and preferably be nominated by their National Adhering Organisation.
