Chemistry Teacher Identity as a Catalyst for Sustainability-Driven STEM Education by Dr. Outi Haatainen
Chemistry is key to a sustainable future, and teachers engage youth with the knowledge and skills for that change. Teacher identity—shaped by beliefs and practices—guides classroom choices and openness to innovations like interdisciplinary STEM for sustainability. This talk shares findings on fostering chemistry teacher identity and shows how non-formal labs, such as LUMAlab Gadolin, act as collaborative spaces where pre-service teachers link pedagogy, sustainability, scientific practice, and current research, beginning to see themselves as sustainability-oriented educators.
