Each year IUPAC endorses a large number of independently organized conferences, symposiums and workshops that cover a wide range of specialized topics in chemistry. Endorsement by IUPAC attests to the quality of the scientific program and indicates the host country’s assurance that scientists from all countries may participate. See program details. In addition, the calendar below includes webinars and workshops related to specific IUPAC projects or joint activities with associated organizations.

POSTPONED !! Writing genomes and metagenomes, and the advent of synthetic evolution

This webinar is being postponed … new date to be confirmed

IUPAC webinar series on Entrepreneurship and Chemistry

Thu, July 23, 2026  | 2:00 pm BST / 3:00 pm CEST / 9:00 am EDT

by Marc Güell, Pompeu Fabra University, Spain

Join us for a webinar with Marc Güell (Pompeu Fabra University, Spain), who will discuss the creation of three companies dedicated to translating scientific discoveries into technologies that benefit patients. These ventures span gene therapy, in vivo T-cell targeting and the skin microbiome for dermatological and cosmetic applications.
Building on his research into new principles and technologies for engineering biological systems, Marc’s work now explores how AI is transforming biodesign. By combining artificial intelligence with multiplex DNA writing, his team has pioneered a new concept in synthetic evolution that promises to accelerate advances in synthetic biology. By leveraging bioprospecting, AI and directed evolution, his team has created novel biological functions with therapeutic potential.
In this webinar, Marc will focus on:
  • How his team developed a gene-writing platform for human cells and deployed it both ex vivo (T cells) and in vivo (liver targeting).
  • How Cutibacterium acnes can be used as a chassis for engineering human skin properties, opening new possibilities for dermatological and cosmetic applications.

About Marc Güell

Scientific excellence and impact has defined Marc’s career. He has a strong record of original, solid, ambitious and scientifically and socially relevant research. His work includes several synthetic biology breakthroughs (highest number of CRISPR edits in a mammal, most recoded genome, PERVs-free pigs, effective gene writing, first skin microbiome modification proof of concept, AI-generated novel gene therapy tools) that have produced tremendous impact (>22,000 citations, companies developing therapies) and he is developing new tools that could revolutionize therapeutic approaches to several medical conditions.

An important part of Marc’s research is being translated into relevant technology transfer. He is the cofounder and founding scientist of three companies [Sbiomedic (in clinical phase for acne; acquired in 2022 by Beiersdorf), eGenesis (xenotransplant, first pig kidney to human), Integra Tx (gene therapy)]. A 4th company is currently in ‘stealth mode’ (Thesian bio; in vivo CAR-T). He is also the inventor of patents licensed to leading biotech companies (Editas Medicine, Verve Therapeutics, Genentech, …). (ORCID 0000-0003-4000-7912)
