The 30th UNESCO/IUPAC Postgraduate Course in Polymer Science will start 1st October 2025 and last 10 months.
The aim of the Course is to enable young university graduates and PhDs – especially from countries with limited research facilities, to acquire knowledge of recent advances in polymer science and professional skills needed for promotion of polymer science in their home countries and worldwide. By educating young polymer scientists, the Course fulfills some of the main aims of IUPAC – to improve education and communication in science. Since the Course also has an impact on expanding and improving the science education in the participants’ home countries and worldwide, it may also improve these countries’ economic status and help fulfill several aims of UNESCO – to encourage international collaboration in science education, gender equality, positive social transformation, and dialogue between different cultures. The Course has been organized annually since the academic year 1996/1997 by the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic under the auspices of IUPAC and the Czech Commission for UNESCO. The Institute has experience in postgraduate polymer science education of more than 50 years and offers up-to-date facilities for polymer science. The Course lasts 10 months and comprises primarily experimental work on research projects under supervision of the Institute scientists, followed by compulsory lectures and laboratory demonstrations in modern polymer science with access to all educational activities within the Institute. At the end of each run of the Course, all of the participants report on their project results in a public meeting, where a certificate bearing UNESCO and IUPAC logos is issued to the participants – new graduates.
The Course is a global activity – with graduates from all continents except Australia and North America, and represents one of education activities of the IUPAC Polymer Division. The course is coordinated without direct IUPAC impetus and endorsement reflects the Institute long-time involvement with the Union ; see prior courses supported by IUPAC
