Prof. Hermans received training in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (MSc 2006), and in Biomedical Engineering (PhD 2010) at the Eindhoven University of Technology. After a postdoc at Northwestern University (IL, USA) he started the Laboratory of Non-Equilibrium Complex Systems in 2013 at the Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires, working alongside three Nobel laureates in Chemistry. Prof. Hermans received the ERC Starting Grant 2017, Thieme Chemistry Award 2018, Prix Guy Ourisson 2019, and is the coordinator of a European Innovative Training Network (ITN) involving 15 PhD students (‘Creanet’) on chemical reaction networks, and is the training coordinator in a second ITN (‘Mami’). He is also the co-founder of Qfluidics (www.qfluidics.com), a company working on low-shear magnetostaltic pumping of delicate biological fluids such as blood.
